Unfortunately, Ackbar isn't around to warn gamers about industrious phishers and scammers out there. However, we do have the next best thing in the good doctors at Bioware, who are warning gamers against accepting invitations to a non-existant Star Wars: The Old Republic beta. Gamers who find themselves overjoyed to be invited to any beta should in no case give their information to any third-party. BioWare cautions that "All of these offers are false. BioWare is not issuing invites to Game Testing via any method other than those we outline here on SWTOR.com."What's perhaps more frightening than being tricked into a fake beta though is EA's stance on banning in situations involving beta testing. The post also warns against game testing accounts changing hands, and that a permanent ban from the game's servers could result.
So the moral of that particular story is, as much as we all want it to happen, there is no official SWTOR beta out yet and signing up for a fake one may bring down the might of EA on you. It's a trap, indeed.

Used to be a Bioware fan (EA takeover, ugh), and used to be a SW fan (until Lucas turned it into a joke with endless edits, re-re-releases, etc, oh, and Jar Jar)
Just don't get the appeal, pew pew lasers, I dunno, played Anarchy Online for 2-3 months when it came out, something about standing around practically point blank blasting away... seems downright silly.
Frankly if your so stupid that you don't even keep track of when the beta keys go out you deserve to be swindled.

They should just release this game already, we have already waited five years for what is going to be a complete utter dissapointment so what is the point of waiting six

I find your lack of faith disturbing.
oh I dont know HeyYou, I don't find it disturbing. not even blizzard was ready for the sheer amount or duplicity of scams when it got really bad. it took them awhile just to find a solution. i'm kind'a agreeing with sharkey. the fact that the published report says that there are over a million and a half people waiting in line for beta probabbly didn't help discourage scam artists. they probabbly saw that number and started to drool from sheer excitment right then and there.

well it's a good pre-emptive post because you know a bunch of folks here will get the phishing/scam and post it in the forums.
I imagine with this sort of scam they're trying to protect kids who might naively believe the process of buying a beta account to be normal practice. Bioware don't want to be banning potential customers 'cause of doucebags taking advantage of people.
Also they don't want the general public playing a beta. They probably won't get the feedback they're looking for and also people may believe they're playing a free demo, find it's riddled with bugs and tell all their friends that ToR sucks.
I have no sympathy for someone getting scammed buying a Beta Invite. They probablly pay for gold/Power Leveling, and wonder why their account got hacked.
I think the two are wildly different. With the advent of pre-order bonuses and exclusives, it's not all that odd to think someone could pay to get beta access, and it does not suggest some sort of in-game cheater's mentality, unlike buying in-game services with real cash.
