It seemed like Techland's zombie game, Dead Island, was anything but living. Announced back in 2009, Dead Island soon fell of the radar with many ultimately assuming it had bit the dust and would never again see the light of day.
That all changed with a sad, haunting announcement trailer of a girl and her family being attacked by a swarm of zombies while on a tropical vacation. It's safe to say that this just might be the saddest trailer I've seen in a long time.
For those who don't know, Dead Island is being touted as a first-person "zombie slasher" with a heavy emphasis on melee combat, character development and weapon customization. The campaign is said to be heavily inspired by classic zombie movies, featuring a gritty and engrossing campaign that can be played with up to four players in co-op. Friends can seamlessly join one another and jump right into the engaging co-op campaign.
The game takes place on an open world, tropical island and will present players with a variety of missions to accomplish. Techland has said that ammunition will be scarce on the island, in which case, the player will be able to utilize random, every day objects from the world as weapons and will even be able to customize their weapons with the found objects. Sounds kind of like Dead Rising mixed with Left 4 Dead if you ask me. If destroying zombies and upgrading weapons doesn't satisfy your gaming taste buds, Techland also stated that Dead Island will feature an RPG-like system of picking a character class and upgrading that character's skills and tactics throughout the game.
Dead Island is being developed by Techland, published by Deep Silver and will be released on the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC later this year. Looks like I'll be adding this to my list of 2011 games. Screens and concept art below:

Dude this looks so good. I can't wait for this. I've been waiting for another zombie game in awhile now!
Holy shit, this looks bad ass! Can't wait.
