Developing games for Nintendo’s 3DS may put companies back between $600,000 and $1.8 million USD, according to Marvelous Entertainment.
Marvelous, best known for its work on Harvest Moon DS and No More Heroes, told Japanese blog Hachimaki “costs vary based on game content,” but even Marvelous’ lowest price point for 3DS development is thousands of dollars higher than that of 2009 DS games.
In 2009, Japanese developers spent $53,000 – $527,000 per DS title, according to data collected by Tokyo Game Show organizers CESA. For comparison, PSP titles range from $36,000 to $710,000, Wii games cost as much as $1.4 million, and Xbox 360 and PS3 games hit a ceiling of $3 million.
In October, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said 3DS game retail prices shouldn’t differ too much from current DS prices.
“We don’t believe that the world is in a state where high priced software will sell well, so we don’t believe it will be in a price range too far off from current DS software,” Iwata said.
