Karl Troedsson, General Manager at DICE, recently blogged about details of multiplayer action in the highly anticipated Battlefield 3. Get ready to lay down some suppression fire – because it’s about to get crazy…
DICE is deploying one of the first instances of games in Battlefield 3 that will utilize it’s Frostbite 2 engine. What’s so great about that? Well, Troedsson remarks that the game will have “some of the biggest and most spectacular maps that we have built”. In fact, the engine provides the technology for “high-quality rendering and resource streaming for creating large and highly-detailed dynamic environments on modern PCs”. (Taken from their Game Developer’s Conference presentation on Battlefield 3 rendering, which you can catch HERE).
The multiplayer map available at E3 will be “Operation Métro” which will show off not only the scale of the maps, but new gameplay mechanics, such as being “able to temporarily disable vehicles, go prone, mount weapons, lay down suppressive fire and more.”.
Troedsson also remarks additional features that will be included, but will not be available at E3. The game will include co-op campaigns, a Team Death Match mode, and something called the “Battlefield 3 Battlelog” on the web, which is basically a social site for the game, where you can “manage your friends lists, squad up, create platoons, use voice chat and follow your friends’ progress in real-time”. This sounds awesome, but not as awesome as the cost to use the service: zero dollars!
The game is shaping up to satisfy fans on the PC, including a social interactive platform for organizing teams and stat tracking. Let’s hope they can deliver similar goods on each console.
Are you all excited at the announcement? What features do you hope to see expanded upon on the console versions? Either way, the body counts are gonna be high…..head shots, baby – all day. Who is with me?
