Sorry for such a delay, I've had to write about 8 papers for school over the last few weeks. If anyone really wants, I'll post some papers about some Political Science shenanigans. Just kidding, video games for life.

Warning this may be slightly biased since I'm obsessed with Pokemon in what is sure to be an unhealthy relationship.

Pokemon Black and White marks the "5th generation" of the Pokemon franchise and bringing the Pokemon count total up to 649. Now we can't expect Nintendo to want to shake up the formula too much, as Pokemon is the 2nd most successful video game franchise of all time, so the basic formula is for the most part the same. You start out as a noob 10 year old in a shanty town with 3 houses and a Pokemon lab and you must conquer the obligatory 8 gyms to live your dream of becoming the champion of the Unova region.

Now the most shocking change is the introduction of CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT and a DECENT STORY! For you all saying there is a story in the previous games, just stop, I love Pokemon but I'm the first to admit that there is absolutly no engaing plot in the previous games. This time however you are still trying to save the world from an evil organization, but now this organization actually has a motive besides stealing all pokemon for world domination and characters that you come to familiarize and even, dare I say, feel for.

Your enemies this time are an organization called Team Plasma who are led by a manchild name N and a person named Ghetsis and some other Sage peeps. They question the often criticized moral ambiguity of catching wild creatures and forcing them to battle. Team Plasma's goal is that for everyone in the Unova region to release their pokemon. Along the way you constantly run into them and I don't want to spoil too much of the particulars but they remain a significant aspect throughout the ENTIRE game.

Your rivals Bianca (Who strangely looks like a female version of your rival in 4th Gen.) and Cheren are also constantly with you the entire game, instead of having the one battle with Gary only to watch him run off and only see him at random intervals throughout the game. While they don't follow you the way Pikachu would follow you in Yellow, they will move from town to town with you, and you are constantly interacting with them at wherever you go.

Finally, in Black and White, you actually get to learn about the Gym leaders, as you are often required to work with them or must accomplish a task for them before you may challenge them. Overall in this game, character interaction and development play key roles in the game. While I don't want to reveal the story, all I have to say is that it is unlike any pokemon game before it.

Of course what's a Pokemon game without the most important aspect, being the actual Pokemon. There are 156 new pokemon and this time around all of the favorites we have grown up with and have come to love are not present anywhere in Unova until after the Elite Four. This gives a much needed breath of freshness to the franchise.

Gaming aspects have changed in some areas while largely have stayed the same. My favorite and often under reported is that Pokemon gain experience points in a new way, which makes it much easier to level your guys up and makes it viable to have a full 6 man team without the need for constant level grindings. In my whole play through I never once had to grinding because my guys were always tough enough for a fight.

There are also 2 new battle modes, one being Triple fights, which act as double battles but with now 3 poke's on each side. The other are Rotation battles, where 3 pokemon are sent out but only one will fight at a time. However before you attack, you can "rotate" to another pokemon and attack with them. Sadly both types of battles are not included much within the main story, however you can fight in these modes in the games version of the battle tower, called the battle subway.

These new battle modes aren't as much of a cluster fuck of Pokemon that I originally thought it would be and do actually require a good amount of strategy.

TM's and Hm's are revemped in this game too. TM's become everlasting and won't break after a use, which makes them so much better, but finding some of the better ones can be a bit tricky. HM's are also nicer as there are only 5 this time around, and most are unneeded for the game. Only if you want to go into side areas will you need to use HM's. For once in a Pokemon game, you will not need a token "HM Slave."

Also with the day and night mechanic that was revamped in Diamond in Pearl, Black and White introduces a new "Seasons Cycle," where every month, there will be a new season that will last a month. The season change is largely for aesthetics purposes, but with the change will come changes into accessible areas and what Pokemon you will find on certain routes.

There's also a huge online mechanic now where you can play a kinda co-op game with your friends, however I haven't played any of this. It has a lot of potential and seems like it can be a lot of fun. For more details I highly suggest checking out Serebii.net

HOW DOES IT LOOK? Pokemon is Pokemon, yet this time the implemented an interesting 3D aspect that I think was pulled off only moderately well. In many areas, the camera will zoom in or out to emphasize the size or details. It's alright but there is much room for improvement. In addition, Pokemon have fully animated sprites throughout combat which is much needed. The downside is that you now see more then just the back of your Pokemon's head and you now see there entire body. Under normal circumstances this would be a good thing, but because it is so close, the Pokemon becomes EXTREMELY pixelated which is quite distracting.

HOW DOES IT SOUND?
Same as always, nothing much new in this department besides some new ambient sounds here and there.

HOW DOES IT PLAY? Some old RPG goodness, with some revamped game mechanics that makes it the most solid Pokemon yet.

HOW LONG WILL IT LAST? Taking my sweet time with my first playthrough, including everything before and everything new after the Elite Four, it took me about 40 hours to complete and I know I'm not done yet.

FINAL VERDICT
If your a die-hard Pokemon fan who's satisfaction for battle can never be sated, what are you waiting for? This is without a doubt the best made Pokemon yet, rivaling the satisfaction from Red and Blue. If your just a casual Pokemon fan who may be hesitant, wait for the eventual "Gray" version that will be released in about 2 years. However, Black and White are very nice versions for people to become "reacquainted" with Pokemon and is also great for anyone new to the franchise.

  1. Evan can we trade some pokemans?

  2. Just got this yesterday. Very good so far.

When I got the game, the Wal-mart clerk said, "I haven't played one of these games since Yellow came out."...

  4. Yeah! Bump you Zubat! Though I was upset that no old pokemon are there in the beginning. Getting a descent psychic type is impossible in B&W. Would've given anything for an Abra, Drowzee, Espion, or even a freaking Meditite! Same thing with flying types.

  6. What?! Munna, Victini, Solosis/Gothita, and Sigilyph all are or evolve into strong Psychic-Types. Also, Drowzee sucks.

  8. This review was kinda...weird but it was pretty much to the point. Good job Evan.

  10. Thanks for the review its was on point and Hilarious!

  11. They need to make a pokemon game with every region available with every badge and Elite 4. Imagine how many hours of gameplay in that!

  12. I didn't think just putting new Pokemon in the game would do anything for me, but so far it has been really fun. I like the changes to the interface and even though the graphics are better, they still have quite a way to go. The 3DS version will hopefully flex some graphical muscles. A few new SIGNIFICANT gameplay innovations wouldn't hurt either, but catching these bastards is still as addictive as ever.

  13. ts my first playing a pokemon game so can somebody tell the diferences between the versions and wich one its better for a starter?(sorry for my poot english)

  15. was hoping Nintendo would save this for the 3DS to give it a better launch (or launch window) lineup and because it's probably the closest to a reboot that Pokemon will ever see. As it stands, Ocarina of Time is the only game I need a 3DS for. And the inevitable Majora's Mask (crosses fingers).

  17. i have yet to order the game because im trying to decide whether to get black or white. Which is better?

  18. None of them are really all that ugly. Not to mention the fact that they all make up for it by being insanely powerful. Seriously this generation has so many sweepers and powerhouses compared to any other generation.

  19. Andreoder Says:
  20. Wondeful game, but an ice cream pokémon that can explode (explosion)?! WOW!!! Another alien pokémon? (no, it isn't a alien pokemon, it is a insect alien pokémon) An TRASH BAG pokémon? C'mon Game Freak! Make cool pokémons! And that hydra pokémon isn't so cool! Apart from that, it's opk

  21. talkii Says:
  22. Is Black/White compatible with the pokewalker, or will there be anything like the ppokewalker for the games? I hope so, it was a great addition to the games.

  23. There are 32 more Pokemon in WHITE than in BLACK. In White, if you enter the White Forest there should be chock full of older-generation Pokemon there.
Some examples include Lotad, Sunskirt, Mangemite, Aron, Nidoran, Hippop, Oddish, Pidgey, and the like

  24. Iganoondoff Says:
  25. Great game(s). I play them since they came out last friday in europe. It's cool that you only see new Pokémon and that the battles are faster.

  27. well i havent played pokemon since 2007 and im kind off thinking about this game since i remember all the fun i had with cousins and my brother besides i need a on the go game since many ds games are shallow in my opinion. Also probably the main reason why i would get this game is for the Video Chat you can do with other DS players that way i can see my cousins that live far away and just for the fact that you have like a video phone you can carry around and use were ever theirs internet

  28. dfdsiui Says:
  29. this looks lik a game 4 tards & tools (pokemon hate!!!)

  30. silverfx Says:
  31. Usually the characters would be 10, but apparently this time they're supposed to be older.

  32. Nevarran Says:
  33. The characters are around 16-18, they're not 10 >.>

  34. Evan Says:
  35. They're supposed to be older, but from the dialogue of the game at one point they say,"I've known you for 10 years now..." So unless they all met up when they were 6 I think they are still 10.

And unfortunately Robert1995, you have to be within close proximity to use the in-game voice chat :(
