Keep your panties on, ladies–Screen Gems has purchased the movie rights to the Devil May Cry and intends to begin a new on-screen franchise with Dante and co. Like, big-screen franchise. Like, Dante on the big screen.

Kyle Ward is penning the piece, with a storyline surrounding Dante as he slaughters demons to avenge his mother’s death, as reported by Variety. Ward’s first movie, Fiasco Heights, is slated for release this year, and he is also the madman behind the Kane & Lynch screenplay in production and set for release in 2013.

As we have no reference for Ward’s work, here’s a snippet of the script for Fiasco Heights, courtesy of ScriptShadow:
AN ERUPTION OF PISS & SHIT GOES SKY HIGH!!
WATCH OUT! THE CONSTRUCTION CARRIER hydroplanes across the piss slicked asphalt -and- slams into the median, sending all 6 concrete cylinders toppling onto the highway.
LUCKY: Ah hell!
Lucky weaves as the cylinders roll across the lanes. He’s dodging perfectly, until of course the final cylinder rolls directly in front of us!
PINK CADILLAC CHUTES STRAIGHT INTO THE CYLINDER GOING 90… TURNS UPSIDE DOWN AS IT ROLLS LEFT AND GETS SPIT OUT ON ALL FOURS ONE LANE OVER.
DELI: HOOOOOOLY SHIT!
NICK: HOLY SHIIIIIIT!
Nick signs the cross. Lucky tries too, but fucks the rotation.
And the Cadillac speeds into the clear….
It sounds like Ward should have been (and may still be) hired to write the Grand Theft Auto franchise screenplay, or the next Crank, but it should be interesting to see what he does with Dante.
No word on which Devil May Cry Screen Gems will be running with, either traditional or the upcoming Ninja Theory reboot version.

Screen Gems has turned Resident Evil into a financially successful (and yet so very terrible) movie franchise, and Ward is a wild card with on-paper potential. What do you want to see in a Devil May Cry movie? Dante? Vergil? Dante and Vergil? Oh, yeah…

  2. Take the idea of a movie based on a game (something which rarely if ever works) add into the mix vampires (yeah, we all love that shit don’t we)

Yeah… this is bound to work.

  4. as long the Dante in the movie is the Classic Dante we grow up with, not that EMO version made by Ninja Theory

  6. If they try to make their own story and not rip off the game storylines, it MIGHT work. MIGHT. Probably. Not.

Wish I was a rich producer who bathed in money and children’s tears.
