Nintendo is plotting a new generation of Wii consoles, according to EA’s Frank Gibeau, Sterne Agee Analyst and common sense.
Gibeau labeled the Wii a legacy platform and hinted that Nintendo is working on a new Wii–most likely HD.
“When you look at Nintendo, for a while there, it was all about the Wii being the biggest entertainment platform ever and capturing the mass market, and it faded away. Now, they’re coming back with a second act,” Gibeau told IndustryGamers. “They understand the dynamics and the fact that HD consoles is a booming part of business right now. Legacy platforms like PS2 and the Wii have dropped off significantly. They’re not stupid. They’re going to figure something out. They’re going to come back at it.”
Sterne Agee Analyst thinks the time for Nintendo to announce a new platform is soon, at this year’s E3 June 7-9:
“Nintendo will likely need to introduce its next upgrade (Wii 2.0?) much before that, simply to catch up with the technology in the PS3 and the 360. Wii’s motion-controller advantage no longer exists given the introduction of Microsoft Kinect and Sony’s Move last year.
“We would not be surprised if Nintendo unveiled the specifications of its next console at E3 in June this year, followed by product introduction early next year.”

No way. Nintendo wouldn’t want to take attention off the 3DS by announcing more new hardware. Give it a year or 2.
The whole ‘HD’ part in the Wii HD, isn’t doing anything for me. I already have an HD console, it’s called the ‘PS3′. I’m more excited to see what besides the HD a next Nintendo(hopefully)Revelution will bring to the table.
Now that I think about it. The Wii really was the ‘Nintendo Revolution’ ;P
It makes sense to me. A lot of people have been looking at the time periods between console jumps. The Wii came out in 2006, so it’s about that time. Sony and Microsoft definitely have more room to breathe before they release their next console, because of their current hardware and the new market for them with motion controls. I think Nintendo, now, has to play a little “catch-up”.
If they do announce a new console, I do not think that it will take much from the 3DS, seeing as how it will already be launched by the end of this month. They’ll definitely highlight the 3DS at E3, no doubt about that. But now, even Nintendo will not be able to survive long on their own exclusive titles.
And it better not just be the “HD graphics” upgrade that everyone wants from Nintendo! If they are only going to upgrade to HD, then they better hook people up with some big-ass trade-in deals. I suspect that Nintendo is smart enough though to bring something new to the table. Something that will get 3rd party companies excited about. Time will tell, but I am expecting a lot from the next Nintendo console.
I think Nintendo will give an idea of whats next for their home console at E3, but I’m not sure if they’ll announce the new hardware at the expo, mainly because of the 3DS. I’d love to be proven wrong though.
Wow, really? That’s your analyst? I as an amateur can tell you, that this will not happen. For different reasons. First off the 3DS will come out for a price tag the Wii did cost when it came out. You think they are so dumb expecting the customers to buy two consoles for a big-ass price in the same year? And then it’s Nintendo! When we learned one thing from them then that Nintendo was always the pioneer, never the follower. As BonusPoint said, there are already two successful HD consoles. Nintendo won’t be dumb to compete on only that premise. The next console will come out when they have new ideas to offer. And they do this right now with the 3DS.
THE NEXT STEP IS A PAD INTERFACE! Think of Zelda and not having to enter menu to get bombs. It would be on a pad next to you touch and go while playing the game with a classic controller . Have a map interface without taking the player out of the game. Clean the heath bars off the screen so the game is like a movie experience. Pick a play from a play book or change guns on the fly. This is the BFG that will win the next war. WHY DO YOU THINK THE DS IS THE #1 selling system ever. This will also give consul MMO a interface with mult sections of spells, items, maps, and game info that has never been done on consul. Think of the possibility.
As much as i would like it to happen i doubt it.
