Like Rapture itself, the BioShock movie seemed like a wonderful idea, but was sadly doomed from conception.
Gore Verbinski was originally slated to direct the flick but plans fell through (In Hollywood? Never.) and Verbinski is now explaining why.
“I couldn’t really get past anybody that would spend the money that it would take to do it and keep an R rating,” Verbinski told ComingSoon.net, ”Alternately, I wasn’t really interested in pursuing a PG-13 version. Because the R rating is inherent. Little Sisters and injections and the whole thing.”
Verbinski wanted to make the BioShock movie as brutal and beautiful as the game, and possibly even creepier.
“I just wanted to really, really make it a movie where, four days later, you’re still shivering and going, ‘Jesus Christ!’” he said. “It’s a movie that has to be really, really scary, but you also have to create a whole underwater world, so the pricetag is high. We just didn’t have any takers on an R-rated movie with that pricetag.”
Because everyone knows R-rated movies are never financially or critically successful. Just ask any of the 10 movies nominated for an Oscar this year, six of which are rated R. Toy Story 3 all the way, baby.
Verbinski said BioShock is a perfect candidate for 3D format because it can make the audience “feel on-edge.”
Last summer BioShock creator Ken Levine said the movie was still in the works, just as Verbinski switched from directing the movie to producing it. There have been no updates since.

I’m both sad and glad about this. I’m glad that Mr. Verbinski stuck to his guns, not compromising the spirit of the franchise just to get a movie out. Given the restrictions for PG-13 movies, it just wouldn’t feel right.
Now the saddness; a BioShock film (if done right) would be awesome!! If they didn’t try to squeeze it into 90 min. and took their time with it, the story could really fit well into a movie. And the plasmids, the splicers, the Big Daddies would look soooo sick on the big screen.
(sigh) Oh well, at least we’re getting BioShock Infinite soo…….damn.
Just because something works in one format doesn’t mean it will be any good in another, this is a prime example, yes it could be amazing but we all know it wouldn’t.
Boo to no Bioshock movie. Yay to no PG-13 Bioshock movie.
