The Latest

Last week, the tubes were literally (if by ‘literally’ you mean ‘figuratively’) abuzz with word on FindMarkarov.com, a site referencing the antagonist who slips away at the end of Modern Warfare 2, and prominently featuring a countdown to…something. With GDC 2011 underway this week, the timer set to run out on Wednesday, and the fact that MW2 was announced at the Game Developer’s Conference back in 2009, all signs seemed to point to the imminent unveiling of Modern Warfare 3.

And then Geoff Keighley got involved. After Activision called FindMarkarov.com a flat-out hoax, the host of GTtv reached out to the people responsible for the site and the real story began to unravel. Turns out that the site is actually teasing a new project from Toronto-based production company We Can Pretend. Something inspired by Modern Warfare; something self-funded; something live action.

Yes friends, it appears that a group of intrepid film makers created a live-action Modern Warfare fan-film and put together the site to promote it (which worked out pretty well incidentally). What remains to be seen is how well the stunt plays out once the film is released (presumably on Wed).
People involved with the production call the movie ‘visually spectacular,’ which it had probably better be. Getting the gaming legions whipped up into a frenzy thinking they’re about to see the first trailer for the next entry in the world’s most successful game franchise could prove to be a disastrous decision if they don’t like the film they got baited-and-switched on.

Are you excited to see what We Can Pretend has been cooking up? Are you disappointed enough to go cannibal over the false hope? Do you think Modern Warfare 3 will still be revealed at GDC 2011? Let us know!
