The Latest

It probably shouldn’t come as any surprise that, despite showing no overt hostility towards any large-scale second-hand game retailers, the gaming industry is nevertheless constantly thinking up new ways to break their business model.

Raising the ante on EA’s Online Pass, we learn today that DC Universe Online features a product activation that ties your specific game disc to your account. Which means, among other things, that there is no way to sell, trade, or loan the game to anyone else.

Given that the game is an MMO, this isn’t really all that out-of-sorts but its an interesting development for console gaming and its continued strategy to prevent players from trading-in used games or retailers from profiting thereby.

Is this just a side-effect of bringing an MMO to a console (complete with the benefits and restrictions common among PC MMO’s) or does it portend a similar activation system’s widespread adoption to try and stem the flow of revenue passing into the secondary game market?
