Activision filed a quarterly report today detailing, under Company Outlook, that due to a decline in interest in the music genre Activision would be discontinuing the Guitar Hero franchise as well as the development of the yet-to-be-released Guitar Hero game for 2011. Along with Guitar Hero, development on True Crime: Hong Kong will also cease.

According to Activision, these decisions were "based on the desire to focus on the greatest opportunities that the company currently has to create the world's best interactive entertainment experiences." It truly is a sad day for Guitar Hero fans around the world, but honestly, who didn't see it coming. Over the past few years Guitar Hero has been dominated by Rock Band and we figured it was only a matter of time before Activision realized that no matter how hard you try, you just can't milk a franchise once it's passed its prime, in Guitar Hero's case, WAY past its prime.
