Someone at Ubisoft must love 3D movies about communal societies run by blue people, because the publisher announced that they will be producing a video game based on the upcoming 3D film The Smurfs.
The game will be released on Wii and Nintendo DS alongside the release of the film, which is directed by Raja Gosnell, stars Neil Patrick Harris and Hank Azaria, and features Jonathan Winters, Katy Perry, George Lopez, and John Oliver as voices for some of the titular tiny blue people as they get chased out of their village by Gargamel and somehow find their way to the middle of Central Park in New York City.
“We’re thrilled to be working with Lafig Belgium and Sony Pictures on the Smurfs license. Our ongoing partnership with Sony Pictures Consumer Products allows us to create fun and entertaining video games based on some of the most popular family films,” said Christian Salomon, vice president of worldwide licensing at Ubisoft. “Ubisoft’s creative team is working hard on crafting the perfect video game experience that will appeal to new and old fans of The Smurfs.”

Not to immediately judge a book by its cover (especially since the book isn’t even technically out yet), but this is probably going to be yet another fail of a video game that is based on the movie.
Now please realize that the only reason I am saying this is because video games based on movies haven’t exactly got the best treatment in the past. GI Joe, Transformers, Terminator, etc. All of these are examples of sheer mediocrity.
Unless the developers actually pull a fast one on the gaming industry, I unfortunately foresee this as yet another movie based, game tragedy.
(Plus I am not to found of playing as little blue people in a video game. I don’t have anything against Smurfs but the idea of a Smurfs video game is frankly absurd to me. Probably not to little kids though, as I imagine that is this game’s target demographic…way to state the obvious right?)
