Nintendo of America’s Product Marketing Manager Bill Trinen revealed some new information about the Nintendo 3DS‘ new ‘eShop’ and the currency involved with making purchases. To start things off, or rather, get out of the way, the 3DS will support DSiWare, and DSi owners who pick up a 3DS will be able to transfer any game purchases from the DSi to the 3DS, so no need for worry.

The new eShop will also be used as a ‘Virtual Console’ of  sorts, with Game Boy and Game Boy Color games being available for purchase, along with the users’ ability to play demos, rate games, and view screenshots and trailers for games being sold at retail. Don’t expect this feature to be on the DSi though, because Trinen states the eShop is exclusive to the 3DS. A bit ironic, as I bought my DSi in hopes of a feature like this being on it.

Oh, and if you noticed how we didn’t mention Game Boy Advanced games, it wasn’t a mistake. They won’t be available. Trinen did, however, respond to the idea: “Basically we’re focusing on Game Boy and Game Boy Color. If we decide to introduce [GBA games] at a later date, we’d announce later if we did.”

If you have a passion for point-currency hatred, Nintendo will soon be your friend as they are getting rid of the entire Nintendo Points system. In it’s place will be the old fashioned style currency known as money. The reason being, money will make it “much more clear to the consumer what they’re spending their money on, and what that exact value is,” as Trinen explains.

In regards to the points on the DSi or Nintendo Wii, Trinen replied that the money left over on those consoles will not be transferable to the 3DS for cash.

More info on the new shop will be revealed as the 3DS launch gets closer, but as of now, Nintendo seems to be making a step in the right direction with their online services. However, will they be able to make a big enough impact with the eShop, or will it be an idea that dies rather quickly?
