The gritty promo video Mortal Kombat: Rebirth isn’t going to be the next Dark Knight, but it could be the next Dr. Horrible.

Director Kevin Tancharoen is bringing the flair of Rebirth to a live-action web series set to debut this spring under Warner Premiere.

The web series starts filming in February in Vancouver and will cover the backstories of our favorite fighters, including Scorpion, Liu Kang and Johnny Cage, in a series of short films.

The scheduled release, as vague as it is, coincides with the Mortal Kombat game’s newly-announced release of April 19.
