Valve studio's jefe Gabe Newell says "people will be shocked again" by primo trio of announcements due over the coming year. (Excitement!)
Valve released a pretty intense twist during the 2010 Electronic Entertainment Expo, when former PlayStation 3 critic and Valve studio's Gabe Newell announced that Portal 2 would coming out for Sony's console in addition to versions for the Xbox 360, PC, and Mac. and wait there's more!, Newell actually enthroned the PS3 version of Portal 2 "the best console version of the game," because of it's compatibility with the new Steamworks, which allows for auto-updates, downloadable content, and community support directly from Valve. (Say, What!) Of course, Portal 2's presence on the PS3 as it would seem won't be the only bit of astonishing news from Valve in the near future. In an interview with PC Gamer magazine, Newell promised that his studio (Valve) is planning to make three more, (Yes, not 1, not 2 but 3 MORE.) surprising announcements over the coming year.
"We have three pretty big surprises in the next 12 months at least," Newell told the magazine. "I can guarantee you people are going to be surprised at stuff we do. That isn't going to stop anytime soon. I'm just laughing because people will be shocked again."

Another (arguably) astonishing and amazing announcement would be that for Half-Life 2: Episode 3. It, initially was all planned as a rapid-fire episodic series, Valve's Half-Life 2 expansions generated quickly and took on a life of their own following the release of Episode 1 in June 2006. Episode 2 presented itself and arrived on its release more than a year after the first release in the series, coming hand in hand bundled style with Team Fortress 2 and Portal as part of The Orange Box in November 2007. Valve has not offered a time frame for the release of Episode 3.

PLEASE let it be either Half-Life 3 or Half-Life 2 Episode 3. PLEASE!!! I'm also prepared to be let down. So that Pretty much covers all my bases.

2. LFD 3 (on SEngine2) with LFD 1 and 2 plus DLC all included 3. Team Fortress 2 or new IP
All with new updates on Steam lite on PS3 =^)
Why would anyone want or expect TF3? TF2 is still receiving fairly regular major updates and has a large community, it's not going away anytime soon.
That being said, I'll be very surprised if DOTA isn't one of the announcements, and it's been so long that something Half-Life related has to be coming.

My predictions:
A brand new game engine to build games. Source Engine is getting old in the tooth. A new Half Life game built on this brand new engine to showcase it. A MMORPG by Valve. Valve is capable of running a MMO on its community platform.
HL2 Episode 3 looks like a sure shot announcement and it's about time. Episode Two IMO is amongst the best games Valve has created and I can't wait for another HL2 installment.

I don't think episode 3 is going to be one of the surprises, because its taken way to long for Valve to produce a single episode. Its definitely HL3, maybe a new LFD for PS3 or LFD3 and that DOTA thing. Hey, at least we know Valve is cooking something up for us!

Seriously, screw Episode 3. Make HL3 instead. The engine is too old now and the constant revamp of a 2003ish engine doesn't work so well seven years later.
The more time they spend on porting to Mac, PS3, and Xbox, the more time it will take for Episode 3/HL 3 and other PC hits. Sad story :'(

They are way different even if they both are Sci fi games, I'm tired of little kids comparing games to each other to provoke flame wars.. I gotta tell ya I hope it is something like this...They release HL2 EP3 and then tell us we are only a few months away from HL3s release....Its been too long for EP3 to work on its own...yeah we want it...but a couple years for 1-3 hours of play? They could really ROAR Half-Life back into the top spot with a move like that...I pray thats what their doing...HL was far too good to abandon.

If it has anything to do with the PS3 I don't care , I'm playing through HL2 EP2 (PC of course) again for the ..?. too many to count. Compared to games lately Valve could take a sh!! and it would be just as good if not better (there are good games out but nothing that compels me to play all the way through non stop) than all of them.
I'm betting they are just jumping straight to Half Life 3 on a new Source 2.

I've said it from the start, and I'll say it again; Episodic content was a BAD IDEA. Devoted customers that invest are shafted if the company goes belly up (like Ritual) or drags their heels like Valve has here. It's overpriced, especially since these are inconclusive snippets, and with no guarantee we'll ever see an ending we're all just buying part of an unfinished product.
This was a money motivated scheme that backfired on Valve, and more so on it's customers, and now all we have are cliffhanger endings and dead silence for years.
Not even the technology model they helped create (planned obsolescence) supports this idea, since by now the engine looks really dated, even feels dated, but they're stuck using it, or worse, they scrub the whole thing and either start all over as if the previous episodes had never happened, or they abandon it for something else.
Valve is a capable company when they put entertainment and quality before fast profit. A real shame they chose not to do so with one of their biggest and brightest franchises. As far as I'm concerned, the conclusion to these 'episodes' is about tantamount to Duke Nukem Forever.
I hope they've learned their lesson.

Well, with all due respect, Valve only hooks PC gamers up with Free DLC. Team Fortress 2 gets mad updates, while the console owners who dont PC game get shafted. All PC gamers got the L4D DLC for free on the PC, while Valve charged people for those two DLC on the 360. May have been Valves or Microsofts choice for that, but to say Valve hooks ALL Gamers up, is wrong. They just hook PC gamers up with free DLC.

I know this has been said several hundred times before, but Valve need to start focusing more on Half Life. If it were not for Half Life, no one would even know Portal or Left 4 Dead would exist. Even if they did, it wouldn't sell very well due to a lack of a decent reputation. I like Left 4 Dead, Portal and the many Half Life mods out there. But please just spill the beans. For some time now, Valve has been proving again and again that they are the No.1 company in the realm of PC gaming. Their games are top notch, and are supported with tons of mods and community features, unlike any other game. Their Steam Store is a little intrusive at times but the very low price tag for games ( especially during sales ) makes it the best service around. Keep up the good work guys!
Hopefully the Left 4 Dead series makes it way to PS3, I'm a buyer.

Source engine was created to be an upgradeable game engine. Think of it as a framework with interchangeable parts. Texture look out of date? Stripe them out and include higher resolution textures. Lighting look dull? Include HDR lighting or ambient occlusion for systems capable of supporting it. I'm not saying source will last forever, but it was built to be around for a while.

The only issue i have with Half Life 2 Episode 3 turning into a full blown Half Life 3 is that Episode 2 ended on a cliffhanger, meaning they HAVE to make the next game resolve that arc and won't be able to advance the universe the way HL2 advanced over HL1. I like that Gabe Newell is finally giving PS3 some props though, maybe this means we'll get PS3 versions of the Left 4 Dead games. Orange Box runs just fine on the PS3, so I'm not sure what the problem was to begin with.

t's probably Half Life and I'm hoping Left 4 Dead 3. I seriously doubt Left 4 Dead ever goes to PS3, as Valve still doesn't see the PS3 as a viable online gaming community. So I doubt they would waste time and money on that.

@Philly1UPer - You're correct, but I never actually said Valve gives all gamers free content... just that they have a history of giving out free contents and even recently a free game. The fact of the matter is however, that Microsoft will not let them distribute DLC for free on Xbox Live... and you can't expect Valve to eat that cost themselves can you? If not for M$'s policies, all Valves DLC would almost certainly be free on the console as well.

Whats' with all the people saying they want Half Life 2 Episode 3 released getting down voted? It's an epic series with a storyline that rivals Metal Gear Solid and Ace Attorney series'. Left 4 Dead is a good shooter, but honestly the Half Life community has been waiting longer, then the L4D people who saw a release last november compared to an even further dated HL release.

I'm not sure why PS3 fans are wanting to jump into the Left 4 Dead series at the third game? As an owner off all the consoles I can safely say I wouldn't have wanted to jump into God OF War 3 on the Xbox 360 and missed out on the first two. It'd be like Resistance 3 coming to the Xbox 360, I doubt it would do well and I don't think getting into a series a few games in is going to really be a good thing.

Or.. you know... even a new Blue Shift, where you can play as Barney would be pretty cool! I always thought it was cool that Barney was secretly working for the Combine at the start of HL2. Seems to be a decent spot for a good story, no? =P
@ metal_advent: The Portal 2 coming to PS3 news was one of the biggest surprises in years, but you have to look at it in perspective. Yes, Orange Box came to PS3, but that wasn't Valve's doing, that was EA's. Gabe Newell touted since the system's launch that he absolutely hated the PS3 and its fans, and would never, ever develop for it. This wasn't just a one-time thing either, his irrational hatred of the PS3 went on for years. So yeah, Portal 2 coming to PS3, developed in-house, was the most game-changing thing that a lot of us never saw coming. I think one of the announcements will be that they've been working on Half-life 3, and it will debut sometime in 2012, with HL2 episode 3 coming next year. A "mind-blowing" announcement can only be more Half-life

ha ha my comment was- in so many words- its like valve is just stringing us along.. hl made and is valve- i have the right to my opinion and if i only want or care to buy a all new hl3- so what.. its my money- i like what i like or want.. i can careless what you want- but i did not go out of my way to bother you-- ha ha im the idiot- what a joke.. i say again expand your mind- its a lot of play in what i said- open a narrow mind and understand- you do not have to take every word literally- and we only have but so much space to type- what ever man- be potent ops important- im just going to ig ya.. im sure i will be better off.. place thumbs down below- enjoy your self.. i think its comical.. by the way- just how many episodes might it take before you start to feel like you are being milked already- 2 more 5 more what- well the last 2 is enough for me- as for said free added content- well is not most all of it community mod stuff- as for other stuff valve might give away- i can care less- its lots of games in this world i do not have or want or want to play.. its not 1 thing hl mp i ever cared about- if its not hl a new hl3- i can care less.. thank you.. have a great day..

They will probably will announce Half-Life 3 or another game box! About time!!!
I love Valve but they sure take their sweet ass time with the games we want, while giving us sequels that we don't want (at least at the moment).
